Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, also known as AOC, was born in Bronx, New York, into a working class family. Growing up, she was interested in politics, and graduated from Boston University with a degree in International Relations. After working for a couple years, she decided to run for Congress, and won in a massive upset. Today, she is one of the most well known and influential politicians in the United States.
During her life, AOC has dealt with sexual abuse. On Instagram Live, she shared that she was a survivor of sexual assault, and that it had a huge impact on her life. Ocasio Cortez was able to overcome her assault though, and has been able to become a successful congresswomen.
In speaking out about her story, AOC helped break down a lot of the stigma around sexual abuse and showed that speaking out can be empowering. She has also been an advocate for mental health, and is a great role model for everyone, but especially for women of color in America.
