Alicia Keys was born in New York City, New York, into a working class family. Growing up, she was interested in jazz, and wanted to be a musician. She started writing songs at 12, and was signed at 15. She released her debut album Songs in a Mirror in 2001, and since then Keys has sold over 90 million records and is one of the most well known musicians in the world.
During her life, Keys has struggled with depression. During periods in her life, Keys has dealt with bouts of depression, not wanting to do anything and dealing with the exhaustion of life. However, Keys overcame her depression, and is still a hugely successful musician.
Keys has been open about her struggles, talking in interviews and on social media about her own mental health. She has helped break down the stigma around depression, especially in the Black community. Keys is a great role model and continues to inspire people across the world who are struggling with depression and mental health.
